[ It's been over a month since she showed up in Luceti. A month of putting on her perfect good little face that Charles approved of and staying out of anyone's business as much as possible. The effort is tiring sometimes and she revels in the chance to close all her curtains and be herself for once. And after some thinking she opens up her journal to address things. ]

What do you do when you're tired of pretending for someone who isn't even around? I know I'm not the only freak here but how long to you bother hiding?

Hey, I know I kind of vanished for a while but. It was all a little too much to take in all at once. Can we have a face to face? [ She takes a deep breath. ] A real face to face. I'll put my cards on the table if you will.

They just wanted me to fit in and not "feel different." Supposedly. It's a pretty lie to feed someone. A pretty excuse.

Oh, I came to that conclusion after being thrown into a black hole.

Since then, I've stopped pretending I'm one of them now that I finally know I'm not. It's been rather freeing.

If you already know who and what you are, what do you gain with the act?

What do I gain? Less nagging back home. Less worrying that someone's going to find out and... dissect me or something.

[ She sighs. ]

I get to pretend I'm normal. [ Even though she already rejected normal when she rejected Hank's cure. ]

Hah. If the Malnosso wish to dissect you, they will not care one way or the other. If anyone within this village might wish to... [He laughs.] From one misfit to another, I will make you an offer I do not often make: my protection in this thing. Should anyone harm you for your simple existence, I will slit them ear to ear.

That isn't much of a gain if you do not enjoy it... and it sounds as if you do not.

[ The offer to cut someone's throat shocks her into silence for a moment. It was startling and intense and for a moment she's once again painfully reminded of Eric. Finally she manages a weak comment. ]

I thought chivalry was supposed to be dead.

And I guess what I gain is... pride. In myself and what I am.

To know who you are is far superior than to pretend to be someone you know you are not. Wishing to please others is just an invitation for them to use you for their own ends.

Yes, for most of my life. I was raised to believe I was one of the Aesir so they could use me as their prince's shadow. I didn't care for being a political pawn.
